The Atlanta Braves announced Thursday that they have extended manager Fredi Gonzalez's contract through the 2016 season.
There also is a team option for the 2017 season.
Gonzalez took over as manager in the 2011 season, following the retirement of longtime skipper Bobby Cox.

In his four-plus seasons with the Braves, Gonzalez is 400-337. He led the team to the NL East title in 2013 and the NL wild-card berth in 2012.
Prior to taking over the Braves, Gonzalez spent four seasons as the manager of the Marlins, with whom he went 276-279 in three-plus seasons.
The Braves also extended the contracts of each member of their major-league coaching staff through 2016, with a team option for 2017.
