DETROIT (AP) Tigers catcher Alex Avila has left Game 3 of the AL Division Series against Baltimore after taking a foul tip off the mask.

Avila, who has had concussion problems in the past, was hit by a ball off the bat of Steve Pearce in the sixth inning Sunday. Trainer Kevin Rand came out to check on Avila, who eventually walked off the field to a nice ovation from the Detroit crowd.

Bryan Holaday replaced Avila behind the plate.

The 27-year-old Avila hit .218 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 124 games this season.
