Astros' spring off to a rough start with Evan Gattis out 4-6 weeks after surgery
Houston Astros DH Evan Gattis will be sidelined for four to six weeks after hernia surgery Tuesday.
After his condition worsened a week ago, Gattis had an MRI exam that revealed the problem. He told MLB.com that he is optimistic he will be ready by the start of the regular season or shortly afterward.
Gattis slugged 27 homers in his first season with the Astros in 2015. The team's 230 homers ranked behind only the Blue Jays (232) in the majors.
Oddly enough, Gattis also legged out 11 triples despite not stealing one base. Overall, he hit .246/.285/.463 with a career-best 88 RBI in 153 games for the Astros, who beat the Yankees in the AL Wild Card Game before falling to the Royals in the ALDS.
With Gattis sidelined and with slugger Chris Carter having signed with the Brewers as a free agent, the Astros could give an extended look to some of their younger players. The Houston Chronicle notes this presents an opportunity for Jon Singleton, Tyler White and A.J. Reed.
