Angels place RHP Fernando Rodney on 15-day DL

Published Jun. 13, 2011 10:32 p.m. ET

The Los Angeles Angels have placed right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney on the 15-day disabled list after team doctors determined additional time off was the best treatment for his upper-back strain.

The Angels made the move Monday before opening a three-game series in Seattle.

Rodney last pitched Wednesday against Tampa Bay, his first appearance since May 30 against Kansas City when the back problem first popped up. Manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels felt Rodney had gotten over the problem with his extended rest, but Rodney thought the injury was still there after his outing last week against the Rays.

Rodney is 2-3 with a 4.09 ERA in 26 appearances this season.

The Angels recalled right-hander Bobby Cassevah from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Rodney's spot. Cassevah was 1-3 with a 4.64 ERA in 18 games for Salt Lake.
