Poll: From expansion to a title game, what should the Big 12 do?
One year ago, the Big 12 Conference was in full freak-out mode. Its two best teams, TCU and Baylor, were shut out of the inaugural College Football Playoff, and Jeff Long, the CFP committee chairman made it clear that the league's lack of a championship game is and will be an issue.
Conference leaders kicked around the idea of adding a title game and, in fact, a vote at the NCAA Convention next month will determine if the Big 12 will be allowed to hold a conference championship game with 10 teams.
Oklahoma's inclusion in the CFP this season has eased some concern within the conference that it had no choice but to seek expansion specifically so it can divide into two divisions and hold a championship game like the other four conferences in the Power 5 structure.
Starting in January, Big 12 leaders will closely examine what its next move, or moves, should be. Much will hinge on the vote at the NCAA Convention. Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel reports that if the Big 12's proposal to hold a title game with a 10-team conference doesn't gain approval next month at the NCAA Convention, then there is a significant chance the league will seek to expand to 12 in the next couple of years.
