Tony Romo: Washington Redskins Savior?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

With the Dallas Cowboys winning without Tony Romo, speculation about his future has begun. Could he find himself in a Washington Redskins uniform?

Last season the Dallas Cowboys and their fans were praying for quarterback Tony Romo to come back from a broken collarbone and deliver a miracle. Instead, he came back and delivered another broken collarbone.

The team limped to a 4-12 start, with 11 of those losses (and just one win) coming with him on the sideline. Needless to say, fans were excited to see what the veteran signal-caller could do in 2016 after his clavicle fully healed.

Unfortunately he hasn’t been able to show anything yet because another injury sidelined him. A broken bone in his back has Romo wearing a headset, but this time the play on the field is vastly different.

Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has guided Dallas to a 3-1 record and has looked fantastic while doing so. He has completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 1,012 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions or fumbles. He owns a quarterback rating of 98.5 and has added another 57 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground for the Boys.

With Dak looking like the future in Dallas, the question is what becomes of Romo? Do the Cowboys hang on to the 36-year old with injury issues, or begin their youth movement?

Many are quick to try and show Romo the door, which means they probably forgot just how good he has been in this league. However, that doesn’t mean they’re wrong either. Going young may be the right move. It could be the wrong one too. All I know is I’m glad I don’t have to make such a tough decision.

For the sake of argument, let’s pretend Dallas does decide to go with the youngster. Where does the elder passer go?

Rich Cimini of ESPN brings up the idea of Romo being a bridge quarterback for the New York Jets. That makes a ton of sense as they may not be sold on their young guys and Tony would be an upgrade over Ryan Fitzpatrick, who recently threw nine interceptions in the past two games.

This isn’t the only team that could use a bridge quarterback though. Another team that could use his services would be the Washington Redskins who are still trying to decide whether or not they have a franchise quarterback in Kirk Cousins.

Here’s why that absurd idea actually makes more sense than you think.

    Why Washington Would Be Interested

Sure, many people will scoff at the idea of Romo heading to the Nation’s Capital, but stranger things have happened. Like Brett Favre in a Jets uniform, Donovan McNabb on the ‘Skins, or Joe Montana in a Chiefs jersey. Even more recently, who would have guessed that Sam Bradford would be starting in Minnesota after inking a two-year deal in Philadelphia just a couple of weeks ago?

Weird stuff happens all the time in the NFL, so why shouldn’t this? Well one reason it should is that Washington has a really good team, but they don’t have a consistent quarterback.

They don’t believe in Kirk Cousins as the guy. They made this clear when they balked at a long-term deal, and it’s understandable why they did. Coming into this season, the quarterback had never led the Redskins to a win against a team with a winning record.

He padded his stats against bottom dwellers and got smoked by the teams that were contenders. Cousins also throws interceptions at the worst possible times and misses wide open receivers constantly. Recently there has even been some grumbling in the locker room about his play.

As it stands now, Cousins is good enough to get you some wins, but not bad enough for you to draft a top-tier quarterback. It also allows the team to move on from Cousins, if they so desire, without getting killed by their fans for not having a plan.

Someone like Romo puts them in win-now mode and allows them to develop a young guy to be his heir.

      Why Romo Would Consider It

With receivers like DeSean Jackson, Josh Doctson, and tight end Jordan Reed in the fold, Romo would have his choice of weapons. He would also have something in D.C. that he never had in Big D: an actual defense.

The Cowboys have been abysmal on that side of the ball, which has led to a lot of hero ball out of Romo. He has had to take more chances than he would like thanks to knowing every time his team didn’t score on every drive, they would probably lose.

In 2014, the team actually had a decent defense. They won 12 games. In Washington, he could produce something similar thanks to the guys around him.

Another reason it makes sense to him is that he could stick it to Dallas for bailing on him, if they did decide to. Athletes can say what they want, but it has to feel good to go to a divisional rival and beat your old team. If that didn’t matter to them, you wouldn’t see it happen so often.

Brett Favre went to Minnesota and stuck it to the Packers. Andre Johnson went to the Colts and now the Titans after Houston cut him. DeMarco Murray went to the Philadelphia Eagles after Dallas let him go, and that’s just naming a few.

In Washington Romo wouldn’t be as hated by fans and media members who have a vendetta against Dallas. He could finish his career in another storied franchise and probably make some noise. Providing he can stay healthy that is.

It may seem weird, but weird can happen in the NFL.
