Cap issues around the league don't hold candle to Chiarelli's mess in Boston
In the wake of the Peter Chiarelli firing, some writers have defended the former Bruins general manager by saying the cap issues he faced in Boston were not so different than those from around the league. The most common comparison writers drew was to the Chicago Blackhawks, who endured a cap purge five years ago after winning a Stanley Cup.
But Boston media personality Michael Felger is not buying the "everyone has cap problems" argument. Felger recently wrote a column for CSN New England in which he noted that cap problems are only excusable when the space is used for high quality athletes. The Bruins salary cap, Felger said, is full of contracts for sub-par players.
"The Bruins? They are over the limit not because they've paid market rate for top-end talent. They're in cap jail because of too many extensions given to too many preferred veterans with replaceable skill sets," Felger wrote for CSN New England. "The Hawks are in cap jail with [Patrick] Kane and [Jonathan] Toews. The B's are there with Chris Kelly and Dennis Seidenberg. Big difference."
