Broncos' Osweiler is facing a make-or-break preseason

Published Aug. 11, 2015 11:59 p.m. ET

Brock Osweiler has learned to make the most of his preseason appearances. It's been the only time the Broncos' backup can hit the field.

That's all about to change for the fourth-year passer. His role on the team is slated to increase. And the people in charge of that team seem to agree they need a good, long look at the Arizona State product this summer.

Why? Because Peyton Manning is 39, and because Osweiler is a pending 2016 free agent. He'll have a role on the team going forward if he can show this new staff a little something.

He's been doing that and more in camp. With mandated rest days for Manning, it's Osweiler who's been in control of the Broncos offense. He hasn't disappointed, per reports.

In the past two preseasons, Osweiler has logged 281 total snaps. He's tallied only 121 career snaps when they actual count in the regular season, but he thinks he's ready.

"I've watched Peyton in games," Osweiler said. "I've watched Peyton in practice. I've studied his tape — Why did he make this decision? Why did he do this? — so when I'm out there on the field I'm able to take some of those things and don't have to go through those experiences to necessarily learn them."
