Why the Hornets need to extend Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Published Jul. 17, 2015 3:04 p.m. ET

The Charlotte Hornets have until October 31 to extend Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, their best defender and a still-developing offensive threat. Even though the Hornets traded for Nicolas Batum, that doesn't make MKG expendable. Extending him should be Charlotte's number one priority, and Austin Peters of At The Hive explains why:

"He may be more valuable to the Hornets than any other team in the league. Charlotte doesn't have any other player on their roster that can defend at the individual level or with the positional versatility MKG can... Charlotte should try their best to get him locked up on an extension around the $14-$15 million per year range so that they can go into the summer with loads of cap room and one of their core pieces still in tact."
