The Nets need Markel Brown to step up in 2015-16

Markel Brown couldn't buy time early last year. That all changed by the end of the season, when he started the final 29 games for the Nets before falling out of the rotation during their first-round playoff series against the Hawks.

Brown is already a defender and energetic transition finishes. He's a tremendous athlete, maybe the best on the floor at all times for Brooklyn, but he's still somewhat of a zero in the halfcourt offense. If he can learn to shoot even close to how he did at Oklahoma State (when he made 38 percent of his threes as a senior), he can provide real value. But he would need to improve a bunch from his percentages a year ago.

Over at Rant Sports, Anthony Parisi writes that Brown needs to improve during year two of his career:

He's still only 23 years old and his release doesn't look awful from long range, so significant improve does seem possible. Even if Brown can get up to 33-ish percent from three while improving his off-ball defense, he'll justify getting burn on a consistent basis purely because of his on-ball defense and energy.

Brooklyn lost Alan Anderson in free agency and his production will need to be replaced. Anderson came off of the bench and provided the team with gritty play, points in bunches and lockdown defense. Anderson’s departure will be tough to stomach for Brooklyn, but it gives Markel Brown a big chance to step in and be a formidable replacement.

Brown started in 29 regular season games last season and he also started in one playoff game. Coach Lionel Hollins was impressed with Brown last season and he even compared him to one of his former players Tony Allen. Allen is known around the NBA as a premier defensive player and he has been a member of the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team three times in his career.
