The Memphis Grizzlies may have interest in Archie Goodwin

With roster changes occurring across the league, the Memphis Grizzlies have supposedly expressed interest in recently cut guard Archie Goodwin.
Archie Goodwin was waived this morning by the Phoenix Suns and the Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring the young guard. Goodwin just turned 22 in August and averages 6.2 points, 1.2 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game for his career. Last year. for the Phoenix Suns, Goodwin averaged 8.9 points, 2.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. He averaged a career high 19.5 minutes per game in large part due to the injuries that plagued Phoenix’s back court.
Coming out of high school, Goodwin was the 12th best recruit in the country. He stands 6’5″ and has a long wingspan of 6’10”. He is a poor 3-point shooter, but excels at finishing at the rim due to his athleticism. Goodwin shot 57.7 percent at the rim last season, while only shooting 23.2 percent from 3-point range.
David McGraw, co-host of the “It’s Always Sunny in Phoenix” basketball podcast, had this to say about Goodwin:
Archie is a guy that was a huge project when he was drafted, with most of us thinking if everything went well he could be a Bledsoe type of player. The athleticism is there, and he can be a good defender. The problem is his jump shot is inconsistent, and he is a little bit of a ball hog. We tried to turn him into a point guard, and while he had some nice assist totals in a few games, that’s just not his game. Archie is a guy that is oddly clutch for having such a bad jumper, and doesn’t shy away from contact. Most of us figured this was a make or break year, we just didn’t know the decision would be made before the season.

The Grizzlies could find a spot for Goodwin as his length and athleticism could help shore up their shooting guard position. Vince Carter is aging and Tony Allen has to spend some of his time playing the 3, especially with Chandler Parsons missing time to start the season. Don’t be surprised if Goodwin gets a call from Memphis should he fall down the waiver list to them.
