Shabazz Muhammad on end-of-regulation gaffe: 'I wasn't aware of the clock'

If there is one thing sports fans know, it's that players or coaches on the field or pitch or court should always be aware of the clock. Always.

Unfortunately for Shabazz Muhammad, he admittedly wasn't Wednesday night when he dribbled the length of the court during a tie game against the Mavericks and accidentally didn't get a shot off before the buzzer sounded and the fourth quarter ended, sending the contest to overtime. The Wolves eventually lost, dropping for the 23rd time in 28 games.

He made no excuses, via Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune:

“I didn’t see the clock, that was my fault,” Muhammad said. “I wasn’t aware of the clock. I just didn’t get it up in time. I just didn’t think I’d do the right things for our team to win. … I’ve got to be more aware of the clock. That’s just something that’s inexcusable for myself. I’m just pretty disappointed about that.”

That's a harsh self-evaluation for a mistake that many players have made before and many will make in the future. Muhammad could've found a way to release a shot on time, but he hardly cost his team the game, especially after the Timberwolves all teamed up to let go of a double-digit lead during the second half.

Still, hearing those comments from Muhammad can help Wolves fans rest easy that a mistake like this one is probably far less likely to happen in the future.
