Nets honor Notorious B.I.G., raise banner to the rafters on ‘Biggie Night’

Few rappers were more synonymous with Brooklyn than the Notorious B.I.G. during his short-lived musical career. The Nets honored the Brooklyn-born rapper, who was shot and killed March 9, 1997, during their game against the Knicks on Sunday.

Family and friends of B.I.G. – whose real name was Christopher Wallace – were on hand as the Nets celebrated the life of the famous rapper on “Biggie Night.” The Nets played some of Biggie’s classics, had his mother, Voletta Wallace, speak during a pregame ceremony and raised a banner in his honor.

The banner displays the No. 72 (the year of Biggie’s birth), one of the countless verses he dedicated to his beloved borough and a crown for the self-described King of New York. The Nets capped off the celebration in style, beating the Knicks for their first win in Brooklyn in 2017.
