Kaminsky's Big Night Not Enough as the Charlotte Hornets Fall to Memphis, 105-90

A wire to wire performance from the Memphis Grizzlies sees the Charlotte Hornets drop their second straight game in disappointing fashion.

The Charlotte Hornets (8-5) were defeated by the Memphis Grizzlies (9-5) as they suffered their second straight loss. After falling in overtime to the New Orleans Pelicans just a few days prior, Charlotte came out slow in this one. They struggled for a majority of the game while Memphis put on one of the best performances this year. A great performance from Frank Kaminsky helped the home keep this one somewhat close. Memphis extended their win streak to five games with the victory.

The Hornets were once again without Cody Zeller (sore shoulder) and Jeremy Lamb (hamstring). The absence of Cody Zeller is a big factor in Charlotte’s current form. Roy Hibbert is still on a minutes restriction and one has to wonder when and if that will come to an end as he only appeared in 10 minutes of game time in this one.

Memphis came out strong with momentum and their 69 first half points were the most Charlotte has allowed in any half so far this season. The Grizzlies stretched their lead to a game-high 26 points early in the third quarter. Charlotte made a run in the second half and cut the lead to just nine in the fourth quarter but after wasting so much energy to get back into the game, they weren’t able to complete the comeback. Memphis eventually pulled away in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Frank Kaminsky led the Hornets with a team-high 23 points and three blocks. He shot 9-11 from the field, 3-4 from three, and his spark with the second unit fueled Charlotte’s comeback attempt. Kemba Walker scored 17 points but was far from his usual as he only shot 6-15 from the floor.

Marco Belinelli and Spencer Hawes each added 14 points off of the bench. Hawes recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds to his name. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist rounded out the team’s double-digit scorers with 11 points and eight boards.

The Grizzlies were led by Mike Conley who scored a game-high 31 points to go along with four rebounds. Zach Randolph chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds with the second unit. Marc Gasol just missed out on a double-double as he scored13 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 0-1 in the season series against the Grizzlies. The two sides will meet one more time this year and it will be in Memphis on November, 28th. Charlotte will surely be looking for some revenge in that one.

In their next match, the Charlotte Hornets will take on the San Antonio Spurs in a cross-conference match-up. That game will be at home for Charlotte as they look to snap their current two-game skid. It will take place on Wednesday, November 23rd.
