Charlotte Hornets: Mike Tobey is Dominating With the Greensboro Swarm in the D-League

Even though the Greensboro Swarm has lost their first two D-League games this season, Charlotte Hornets’ prospect Mike Tobey has been dominating.
The Charlotte Hornets‘ NBA Developmental League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, have had a rough start to their first season. They are 0-2 after two games and while most of the team hasn’t impressed, Mike Tobey has dominated with his outstanding play. The rookie big man has easily been the team’s best player so far.
After playing at the University of Virginia for four years, Tobey went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft. He played with the Charlotte Hornets in the Orlando Pro Summer League and impressed enough to earn a spot on the team’s training camp roster. Although he didn’t make the final regular season roster, Mike would be the starting center for the Hornets’ D-League affiliate this year.
A season in the NBA Developmental League would allow the 6’11 big man to continue his growth and round out his game going forward. After just two games with Greensboro, it is pretty clear that Tobey could have a legit future in the league.
More from Swarm and Sting
Through the first two games of the D-League season, the 22-year old has already recorded two double-doubles with 20+ points and 10+ rebounds. Mike is averaging 20.5 points per game, 12.5 rebounds per game, and 2.5 blocks per game. In 40.5 minutes per game, he is shooting 46.9% from the field and 68.8% from the free throw line.
Of all the D-League players who have played in at least two games this year, Tobey ranks 14th in scoring, first in rebounding, and third in blocks. He is also one of only two players to record a double-double in each of their first two games. One downside to his play is that he is averaging 5.0 fouls per game which could be a problem once he gets to the NBA with higher level opponents.
Here’s a look at Mike Tobey’s latest double-double performance against the Westchester Knicks:
Mike is currently third on the Greensboro Swarm in scoring and leads the team in blocks and rebounds. He has also been a monster on the offensive glass with 5.5 offensive boards per game which is third in the D-League and first among players who have played more than one game. Greensboro’s coaching staff is doing an outstanding job of developing Tobey as the raw prospect is already showing signs of improvement.
If Tobey continues his exceptional player, he could get a call up to the Charlotte Hornets this season or as early as next year. Even as an undrafted big man, Mike has plenty of talent and skill on both ends of the floor. With more playing time in the D-League coupled with double-double performances, it won’t be long until he becomes a productive player at the NBA level.
