According to Shams Charania of Yahoo’s The Vertical, the Chicago Bulls are closing in on a deal to sign former Boston Celtics wing R.J. Hunter as their 15th man on the roster.

It appeared that the Chicago Bulls were going to do what they usually do and carry 14 players on their roster heading into Thursday night’s opener against the Boston Celtics.

That changed on Wednesday night.

The Vertical’s Shams Charania reported that the Bulls are closing in on a deal to sign the recently waived R.J. Hunter.

What’s interesting about the move is that 1) The Bulls are signing a former Celtic just hours before they take the floor to face Boston in the season opener and 2) Hunter will take the 15th and final spot on the Bulls roster.

The only team in the league that had a roster spot open to this point was the Bulls. It’s not a groundbreaking move by any means, but it’s a solid move that gets the Bulls “younger” in terms of the roster as a whole.

Hunter hasn’t shot well from the perimeter in limited action with the Celtics, but with the new D-League team in place for the Bulls, there’s an outlet for Hunter to work on his game, get substantial minutes against good competition and work on cracking the Bulls rotation as the season goes along.

Although Hunter struggled to shoot consistently from deep in his lone NBA season for the Celtics last year, it’s a good move for the Bulls because it’s a low-risk chance they’re taking. Hunter was one of the deadliest shooters in the college game during his time at Georgia State.

It’s a chance worth taking if you’re the Bulls and now, the roster is officially full as the regular season opener against the Celtics looms.
