The Brooklyn Nets had a bit of a slide this week due to a tougher schedule. After going 0-4 this week, the Nets have really taken a beating in the standings. Here is a recap in a slow week of news surrounding the Nets.

Brooklyn Nets Burn Out Against Blazing Hot Trail Blazers
Another tough loss for the Nets to round out the week. This loss gave the Nets their first winless week this season.

    Thoughts

The Nets a had a tough week. It was their first week this year, including preseason and the regular season, in which they went winless. It should not come as a surprise considering that their schedule was a against much tougher opponents. The only game this week that the Nets had a shot at winning was against the Lakers. The Lakers have been playing well this season, and it was the second night of a back-to-back for Brooklyn. The Lakers managed to edge out the Nets. The rest of the games speak for themselves, in that Brooklyn simply played much more talented teams. It was a bad week, but two of their next three games this week come against losing teams. It will be a great opportunity for them to recover from this weeks misfortune.

Player of the Week: Brook Lopez

    Stat Averages for the Week

    24.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 47%FG, 45% 3pt FG

This was the easiest player of the week so far. Lopez played three of the four games this week, but performed very well in each outing. He has not been scared to shoot the three either. There were some doubts surrounding Lopez’s ability to shoot from three, but he has made the transition very quickly. He is even more of a threat on offense thsn he ever was. That really says a lot about a guy who was considered a top 5 offensive center last season. On defense, he has been playing well too. Lopez is not the most athletic guy, but when you are seven feet tall you don’t have to be. Lopez understands this and just tries to put his body in places that he can alter shots and make it harder to score around the rim. The only part of his game still lacking is his rebounding. I have mentioned this before and it is not entirely his fault. He has more athletic teammates that swoop in to grab rebounds while he boxes his guy out. Lopez is not known for his rebounding to begin with, so it is understandable that he only averaged 6.7 rebounds this week. It would be nice to see improvement in that area, but the stat it self does not tell the whole story.

    Rebounding, Rebounding, Rebounding!

That brings me to my next point. The Nets are in the bottom half of the league in rebounding. As a team, they average 43.5 rebounds per game. But this week they were heavily out rebounded by their opponents, 218 to 179. That is a difference of 39 rebounds. The Nets were out rebounded by almost an average of 10 rebounds per game this week! A perfect example would be last night’s game against the Trail Blazers.

The Trail Blazers are ranked 21st in the league in rebounding and the Nets are ranked 18th. That is not a huge gap, but in last nights loss to the Trail Blazers, the Nets were out rebounded 50 to 36. Clearly the team needs to make an improvement in this area if they do not want things to spiral out of control in the coming weeks.
