Brooklyn Nets Release Greivis Vasquez and Sign Yogi Ferrell

The Brooklyn Nets have released Greivis Vasquez and will sign Yogi Ferrell to their roster.

As reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, the Brooklyn Nets are releasing Greivis Vasquez and will sign Yogi Ferrell.

Brooklyn is releasing guard Greivis Vasquez, who needs ankle surgery, league sources tell @TheVertical. Nets will sign Yogi Ferrell.

Vasquez has only played in the Nets’ first three regular season games. In Brooklyn’s third matchup against the Miami Heat, the 29-year-old point guard suffered a right ankle injury. This injury forced him to miss Brooklyn’s last four games.

The six-year NBA veteran has had his share of issues with his right ankle. Last season, he underwent surgery to remove a bone spur and loose bodies from his right ankle. He played just 23 games with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2015-16.

Meanwhile, Ferrell went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, but joined the Nets for Summer League and earned a partially guaranteed contract with the team. In four Summer League games, he averaged 8.8 points, 1.8 assists, 1.5 rebounds in 17 minutes per game.

The former Indiana Hoosier also played in three preseason games for the Nets. During the preseason, Ferrell showed incredible hustle, and Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson has referred to him as the “energizer bunny.”

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old point guard was waived on October 21. He was acquired by Brooklyn’s D-League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, on November 1.

Since Jeremy Lin went down with a hamstring injury one week ago, there have been concerns over Brooklyn’s lack of depth at point guard. With Ferrell in the picture, this adds one more player to the squad that works solely at the point.

This action comes one day after Brooklyn recalled sophomore Chris McCullough. Over the past two days, the Nets moved McCullough to the D-League twice and brought him back twice.

Brooklyn faces its cross-town rivals, the New York Knicks, tonight at Madison Square Garden. Woj also reported that Ferrell will suit up for this game.
