Briefs: Rebounding issues resurface in Warriors' loss

The Golden State Warriors had trouble rebounding in a 116-97 preseason loss at the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday.

The Warriors had a difficult time boxing out the Kings' active big men, who looked a step quicker and a tad hungrier. David Lee did register 10 rebounds, to go with 17 points for the Warriors. But the next -highest rebounders were forward Vladimir Radmanovic and point guard Stephen Curry with five each. Golden State was outrebounded 46-33.

LeBron James scored 22 points in 26 minutes before leaving with leg cramps in the third quarter, Chris Bosh added 17 points and eight rebounds, and the Heat overcame an early 10-point deficit to beat Euroleague powerhouse CSKA Moscow 96-85 in an exhibition.

Rangers beat Rays, reach ALCS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Cliff Lee added another impressive line to his growing October resume, carrying the Texas Rangers into their first AL championship series.

Lee struck out 11 in a six-hitter to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 in a decisive Game 5 on Tuesday. It was his second win over Rays ace David Price in a series in which the road team won every game -- a first in major league history.

The Rangers will host the wild-card New York Yankees in the opener of the best-of-seven ALCS on Friday night. Lee improved to 6-0 with a 1.44 ERA and three complete games in seven career postseason starts.

Brigel helps Knights stay unbeaten

The Palo Alto Knights' Josh Brigel saved the day in the fourth quarter as the Palo Alto Knights Junior Pee Wee team beat previously unbeaten Oak Grove South 15-14. Brigel intercepted two passes and caught the go-ahead extra point.

With the Knights (6-0) down 14-8 in the fourth quarter, Brigel intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. The Knights then converted the extra point on a halfback pass from Ethan Stern to Brigel in the back corner of the end zone.

Oak Grove was driving in the final minutes when Brigel intercepted his second pass to seal the victory.

The Knights' defense was led by Stern, Brigel, Jamie Cullen, Jack DeVine, Jordan Schilling, Ryan Mitra and Louie Marzano. Lee Howard led the Knights in rushing with 86 yards and a 1-yard touchdown.

ELSEWHERE

The San Francisco 49ers claimed safety C.J. Spillman off waivers from the San Diego Chargers. To make room on the roster, the team waived cornerback Tramaine Brock. Fullback Jehuu Caulcrick also has been released from the 49ers' practice squad. Spillman was signed by the Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2009.

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel announced that the team has suspended receiver Josh Smith, the team's top kick returner, and F-back Morrell Presley, who has started all six games this season, for the Oct. 21 game at Oregon for violating team rules. UCLA didn't specify the exact reason for the suspensions, citing student privacy laws.

Menlo College beat visiting William Jessup 2-1 in women's soccer. The Oaks got goals from Christine Rodriguez and Redwood City's Amanda Torres.

The Menlo College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over visiting William Jessup in double overtime. Alex Vukic scored both goals for the Oaks.
