White Sox pitching coach Cooper ill, misses game

Published Apr. 9, 2013 7:39 p.m. ET

Chicago White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper has been taken to a hospital with a stomach illness and will miss the team's series opener against the Washington Nationals.

The team said Tuesday that Cooper has diverticulitis.

Cooper will be replaced by bullpen coach Bobby Thigpen for Tuesday night's game at Washington, while bullpen catcher Mark Salas will handle Thigpen's duties.

Manager Robin Ventura says Cooper could be back with the White Sox on Wednesday.
