Toronto C Arencibia barbs Blue Jays broadcasters

Published Jul. 4, 2013 7:05 p.m. ET

Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia had some pointed criticism for his on-air critics.

In a morning appearance on Toronto radio station Sportsnet 590 The FAN, Arencibia fired back at Sportsnet analysts Dirk Hayhurst and Gregg Zaun, former major leaguers who both played for the Blue Jays.

Hayhurst and Zaun have been critical of Arencibia's play this season.

''There's not one person in our clubhouse that respects those guys because they're informing the fans the wrong way,'' Arencibia said Thursday.

Arencibia said Hayhurst had ''below-average baseball tools'' and referenced Zaun's inclusion in the Mitchell Report, baseball's investigation into performance-enhancing drugs. Zaun has denied using PEDs.

Arencibia is hitting .216 this season.

The radio appearance was intended to promote a charity youth baseball team Arencibia is involved with. He sent out a tweet after Wednesday night's loss to Detroit urging fans to tune in and hear him discuss Hayhurst and Zaun.
