Tigers trade OF Baker, recall OF Garcia
The Detroit Tigers traded Jeff Baker to the Atlanta Braves after opening up a roster spot for minor league outfielder Avisail Garcia.
Baker was designated for assignment Friday and got dealt to Atlanta within the same day. Garcia was recalled from Double-A Erie.
The Tigers had 10 days to trade, release or send Baker outright to the minors. They quickly found a taker for him. The Braves will send a player to be named within a month for Baker. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs for two minor leaguers to be named less than a month ago. Baker hit just .200 in 15 games with four RBIs.
The Tigers decided Garcia is a talented player they determined was worth putting on the roster now to have him on the team if they make the playoffs. The 21-year-old outfielder from Venezuela hit .312 in 55 games at Erie and is expected to play Saturday night against the Chicago White Sox and left-hander Francisco Liriano.
