The Mets likely have lost another starter for the season
The New York Mets have overcome plenty of adversity this season, and they got more bad news Saturday.
Right-hander Jacob deGrom was scratched from his Sunday start and likely will be shut down for the remainder of the season because of an elbow injury.
Alderson said deGrom will be shut down for the season. Likely to have ulnar nerve surgery on right elbow. @Mets

Mets GM Sandy Alderson told reporters that deGrom probably will need surgery on his ulnar nerve, though his ligament is intact. Here’s Alderson, via The Star-Ledger:
The 28-year-old righty last pitched on Sept. 1, and that was his only start since Aug. 24. In 24 starts this season, deGrom went 7-8 with a 3.04 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 148 innings. He joins right-hander Matt Harvey, third baseman David Wright and second baseman Neil Walker as Mets who have suffered season-ending injuries in 2016.
Despite it all, the Mets hold a two-game lead over the Cardinals for the NL’s second wild-card spot headed into their game against the Twins on Saturday night.
