Strong 2015 earns DeShields Rangers' Rookie of the Year honor

Published Nov. 23, 2015 10:00 a.m. ET

Last week, the Texas Rangers traded once-touted outfielder Leonys Martin to the Seattle Mariners. That they were able to do so had a lot to do with the 2015 emergence of Delino DeShields, who was named the club's Rookie of the Year over the weekend by the local chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

DeShields, acquired from the Houston Astros in the Rule 5 Draft prior to the 2015 season, won a spot in the outfield after spring training and didn't look back.

In 121 games at the big-league level, DeShields hit .261/.344/.374 with 22 doubles, 10 triples, 25 stolen bases and wound up seventh in American League Rookie of the Year voting thanks to the strong impression he left during the season.

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan points out that DeShields will be honored on January 22 as part of the festivities at the Dr. Pepper Texas Rangers Awards Dinner at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas. Fans interested in attending the event, which will feature numerous Rangers players and personalities, can purchase tickets on the team's official website
