The San Francisco Giants have traded former starting pitcher Chris Heston to the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named later. With the signing of closer Mark Melancon, the Giants needed to make room on the 40 man roster.

Sources have told Joel Sherman that the trade has been agreed to, but the teams will finalize officially in the next few days. The San Francisco Giants would have had to designate Chris Heston for assignment today if a trade had not been agreed to, according to Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area.

When you add the late season emergence of Albert Suarez and Ty Blach along with the team’s belief that former first round pick Tyler Beede may challenge for the fifth starter spot as well, there was simply no room for Heston.

Seattle recently traded Taijuan Walker to the Arizona Diamondbacks, so the team was in need of starting pitching.
