Rumor: White Sox Asked for High Return from Astros for Jose Quintana
White Sox reportedly asked for high return from Astros in exchange for All-Star left-handed pitcher. The South Siders are currently rebuilding and can add more depth to its farm system.
The Chicago White Sox made two solid trades this past week as they were able to haul returns of top prospects. However, the White Sox are rumored to have asked another team for its top prospects in exchange for Jose Quintana.
According to Peter Gammons, the White Sox asked the Houston Astros for Francis Martes, Kyle Tucker and Josepth Musgrove in exchange for Quintana. Martes (29th overall) and Tucker (50th overall) are the Astros top two prospects according to mlbpipeline.com. Musgrove, was ranked as the 83rd overall prospect entering this past season by Baseball America.
While this might seem like a high return to some, this actually isn’t that bad of an asking price for Quintana. The White Sox traded Chris Sale to the Red Sox for two players listed as top 30 prospects in Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech. Included in that trade were two other Red Sox prospects in Luis Alexander Basabe and Victor Diaz.
Although Quintana isn’t regarded as an ace, he very will could be an ace for any team including the White Sox. If a team wants to trade for him, they will have to pay a hefty price. Quintana, like Sale, has a team-friendly contract and is under team control until 2020. The price for Quintana won’t be cheap, and most teams should be aware of this.
The White Sox asking for a return including the Astros top two prospects is fair, and shows just how aggressive Rick Hahn is in rebuilding the teams farm system. With the White Sox having a top ten farm system after its last two recent trades, they could truly have the best minor league system with another solid trade.
If the White Sox don’t trade Quintana this offseason, it won’t necessarily be a bad thing. Quintana could provide the White Sox with solid production next season, and could drive his price even higher if he’s on the trading block by the trading deadline. If the White Sox do trade Quintana this offseason, expect more top prospects to be included in a return for the All-Star pitcher.
