Rowand leaves game after getting hit in head

Published Apr. 17, 2010 1:07 a.m. ET

San Francisco Giants center fielder Aaron Rowand left Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth inning after getting hit in the helmet by a pitch from Vicente Padilla.

Rowand was struck on the bill of the helmet, one pitch after Padilla was visited on the mound by pitching coach Rick Honeycutt. Rowand spent a few minutes on his knees behind home plate after manager Bruce Bochy and a team trainer rushed out of the dugout. Rowand left the field under his own power and received a round of applause by the Dodgers crowd.

In the second inning, the Dodgers' Matt Kemp dived to the ground on a high and tight pitch from Todd Wellemeyer, who gave up a home run to Kemp his first time up.
