Rockies' 2B DJ LeMahieu an unlikely All-Star starter

Published Jul. 14, 2015 1:19 a.m. ET

Of the three Rockies’ All-Stars, second baseman DJ LeMahieu is the least recognizable, and would have probably been considered the least-likely of the three to be starting the All-Star Game. Yet he’ll be one of the starting nine on Tuesday for the NL due to an injury to the Marlins' Dee Gordon.

Per MLB.com’s Tracy Ringolsby, Rockies five-time All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki praised LeMahieu:

"DJ is the steady Eddie...What's an honor for him is the players' vote. It shows they know what he is doing and how solid he is."

Ringolsby points out that LeMahieu was considered a “throw-in” in a deal prior to the 2012 season between the Rockies and the Cubs.

LeMahieu admitted that this still motivates him:

"It still drives me...I had the feeling when I was traded that was how the rest of the league looked at me. I was the throw-in."
