Report: Phillies' Lee done for season, won't need elbow surgery

Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee will not pitch again this season but will avoid surgery on his injured elbow, MLB.com reported on Wednesday.

Lee, on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 2 flexor pronator strain, lasted only 2 2/3 innings in his most recent start on July 31. That was his third outing after returning from a two-month stay on the disabled list because of the same injury.

"We hope to get him into a throwing program in October or November," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told MLB.com. "But right now he needs to rest."

The Phillies still owe Lee at least $37.5 million, including his $25 million salary for 2015 and a $12.5 million buyout for a 2016 team option.

Limited to 13 starts this season, Lee finishes with a 4-5 record, a 3.65 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 81 1/3 innings.
