Report: Chamberlain likely done for 2011

Published Jun. 9, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain has a torn ligament in his right elbow that will likely require season-ending Tommy John surgery, the New York Post reported Thursday.

Chamberlain went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with what the team called a strained flexor tendon in his right arm. He was originally expected to miss about a month.

The injury had plagued Chamberlain for a few weeks, but he notified manager Joe Girardi Tuesday after the pain became too much to pitch with.

"It was at the point where I needed to say something, so I went in and said something," Chamberlain said Wednesday.

The hard-throwing, 25-year-old had an MRI Wednesday, after which the Yankees disclosed the strained tendon.

Chamberlain threw 35 pitches in Anaheim Sunday, but Girardi and Chamberlain insisted his elbow problem was not directly related to the long outing.

Chamberlain has been the primary setup man with Rafael Soriano on the disabled list, and has performed well, posting a 2.83 ERA in 28.2 innings.

With the Yankees missing their top two setup men, they will now lean heavily on righty David Robertson in the eighth-inning role, and unheralded Luis Ayala in the seventh.
