Reds coach Berry returns after cancer treatment

Published Jul. 23, 2013 12:39 a.m. ET

Cincinnati Reds third base coach Mark Berry is back in his familiar spot for the first time all season after undergoing treatment for throat cancer.

Berry made his 2013 debut coaching third in the opener of a four-game series at San Francisco on Monday night.

The 50-year-old Berry, the team's bench coach since 2003, has been with the organization as a player, minor league manager and coach for 30 years. He was diagnosed during spring training with cancer of his tonsils and neck lymph nodes.

Bench coach Chris Speier filled in coaching third during Berry's absence, while Miguel Cairo served as interim bench coach on manager Dusty Baker's staff.
