President Obama welcomes San Francisco Giants to White House for third time

On Thursday, President Obama welcomed the San Francisco Giants to the White House for the third time during his two terms in office. As Obama welcomed everybody in attendance he quipped, “For these folks I guess it’s ‘Welcome back.’” He cited the team’s even year magic and joked that he seemed to be good luck to them.

In addition to a mixture of players from last year’s team and newcomers this year, Monte Irvin and Willie Mays had front row seats during the President’s remarks. Irvin, 96, was the first African-American player in Giants history in 1949.

Besides mentioning Madison Bumgarner’s legendary October performance, the “core four” out of the bullpen and rookie Joe Panik, Obama also poked fun at Hunter Pence by bringing up the famous Hunter Pence signs. “Not everybody would have laughed at those signs, but not everybody is Hunter Pence,” he said.

Both the Giants and the President seemed to enjoy themselves at the event.
