Pittsburgh Pirates: Sign Back Two Minor League Pitchers
It is that time of the year that teams start to make minor moves to get prepared for the true off-season in November. Today the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they brought back two minor league pitchers, not major news but two names you will recognize.
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they have resigned right-handed pitchers Casey Sadler and Angel Sanchez. Both of these pitchers spent a good amount of time with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Many should remember Sadler as he looked like a potential rotation/long relief candidate entering the 2015 season. Sadler did pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014 also. Angel Sanchez never appeared in the big leagues for the Pirates. Sanchez did pitch effective in Double-A and Triple-A during his time as a member of the organization. He was picked up at the trade deadline in 2014 and was released after the 2015 season.
Casey Sadler
Of the two, Sadler is the most notable. The 6’4” right-handed pitcher was a 2010 draft pick out of Western Oklahoma State College. The former 26th round draft pick holds a career minor league earned run average of 3.37 along with a solid WHIP of 1.20 in 563 innings pitched. Sadler, now 26 years of age, made his professional début in 2014. He made six appearances out of the bullpen for the Bucs throwing 10.1 innings. He struggled in his short stint, he had an earned run average of 7.84, along with five walks, and a 1.60 WHIP. However, in a way was expected, and people still considered him as part of the Bucs future.
In 2015 he made one appearance with the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was his first career start. It came on April 12th when he pitched in place of Francisco Liriano, who was on paternity leave. Sadler pitched fairly well, going five innings, giving up two earned runs, and recording his first big league victory. Sadler was cut this past January after receiving Tommy-John surgery in late 2015. Mostly a moved made for roster reasons, and the belief was that he would be back when healthy.
Angel Sanchez
Angel Sanchez is more of an organizational signings. In 2015 the right-handed pitcher made 23 starts between Double-A and Triple-A. He was very good pitching to a 13-2 record with a 2.69 earned run average. However, Sanchez also received Tommy-John surgery late in 2015, and missed all of this past season. The now 26-year-old will likely help the Triple-A Indianapolis rotation, who saw all their pitchers graduate to the Pittsburgh Pirates last year. All in all, both of these moves are purely depth moves and ones that make sense. Both players were released due to injuries and promptly brought back on official contracts now that they are healthy. Both should be ready for Spring Training.
