Pirates trade Richard to Cubs
The Pittsburgh Pirates traded left-hander Clayton Richard to the Chicago Cubs for cash considerations, according to Pirates.com.
"It was a challenging decision," Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington told Pirates.com. "We really like Clayton a lot, and we feel he can and will help a Major League team. [When] he exercised the clause, the Cubs called, and we could have called him up but opted to stay with the club that we have."
Richards had an "upward mobility" clause in his contract meaning that the Pirates had to give him to a team willing to put him on the Major League roster unless they put him on their active roster themselves.
"We thank Clayton for his hard work," Huntington said, "and hope he'll go do well … maybe not when he plays against Pittsburgh."
