Pirates plan to be flexible with Kang's rehab schedule
The Pittsburgh Pirates were dealt a blow when they lost Jung Ho Kang to a knee injury after colliding with Chicago Cubs infielder Chris Coghlan while turning a double play.
The injury required surgery and the expected rehab time is six to eight months.
Though Kang is expected to be released from the hospital this week, the Pirates don't have a concrete plan in place just yet for his rehab.
“It's too early for us to be able to put a concrete plan in place right now,” Pirates GM Neal Huntington said Tuesday via TribLive. “We're still working through it with him, (agent) Alan Nero and everybody involved in the process as far as what are the right next steps. We want to be sensitive to healing and also sensitive to what he can and cannot do at this point in time.”
Kang, a native of Korea, might head home to do a portion of his rehab as well.
“There are going to be important times for him to be with us (in Pittsburgh),” Huntington said. “But we also absolutely respect there are going to be times when he'll want to get home (to Korea) and get away from some things for a little bit.”
In his place, utilityman Josh Harrison will see some time at second base as the Pirates look to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
