Pirates interview ex-Marlins and D-Backs coach

The Pirates on Thursday interviewed former Marlins and Diamondbacks coach Bo Porter, their second candidate for their vacant manager job.

Porter, 38, was Florida's third base coach and outfield instructor from 2007-09. Earlier, he served as a coach and manager in the Marlins' minor league system.

He began this season as the Arizona Diamondbacks' third base coach, then was elevated to bench coach in July when Kirk Gibson became interim manager. In June, he interviewed for the job of Marlins manager but was passed over. Arizona fired Porter after the season.

An outfielder, Porter played 89 games in the majors from 1999-2001 with the Chicago Cubs, Oakland A's and Texas Rangers.

Note: According to the Caribes de Anzoategui website, outfielder Jose Tabata is listed on the team's roster. Last month, Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said the team would discourage Tabata from playing winter ball in his native Venezuela this offseason. Yesterday, Huntington said via email that "presently, there is no agreement in place" for Tabata to play for Caribes this winter. Pirates prospects Gorkys Hernandez and Exicardo Cayonez also are listed on Caribes' roster.
