As part of his upcoming visit to the United States, Pope Francis will make an appearance in Philadelphia for the 2015 World Meeting of Families conference. To celebrate his time in the City of Brotherly Love, the Philadelphia Phillies will pay tribute to the momentous event by bestowing upon the Pope his very own “Rookie Card.”

During Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals, fans will be allowed to pick up their own Pope rookie card at various locations in Citizens Bank Park, per the team’s official site.

“In honor of Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to celebrate the World Meeting of Families Congress,” the announcement reads, “fans may pick up a commemorative Phillies Pope Francis Rookie Card at the First Base and Third Base Kiosks.”

It’s a nice touch that the Phillie Phanatic is holding the card in the photo. One can only imagine the conversations that would occur should the mascot and His Holiness strike up a conversation.

Given the struggles the Phillies have experienced this season as the team has limped to a woeful 56-90 record, perhaps the team can glean some divinely inspired benevolence from the Pope because of its interesting gesture.

The Pope’s visit to Philly has made some news related to the Eagles as well, as the team was forced to open the season with a harrowing road schedule due to the commotion caused by the pontiff’s swing through town. Not only that, it was jokingly suggested that the Pope should bless quarterback Sam Bradford’s troublesome and injury-prone knees during his visit, something the quarterback wholeheartedly endorsed.

It looks like the Phillies are attempting to gain favor in a similar manner.
