Phillies sign Andrew Bailey, Edward Mujica to minor league deals

Matt Klentak has been a busy general manager this offseason.

Since being named the Philadelphia Phillies GM, Klentak has acquired a number of players and continued that trend Thursday, signing relievers Andrew Bailey and Edward Mujica to minor league deals with invitations to major league spring training:

Bailey, 31, appeared in 10 games in 2015, his first appearance in the big leagues since 2013. The 2009 AL Rookie of the Year has battled injuries in recent seasons -- his last productive season came in 2011 with the Oakland Athletics. In his career, he owns a 2.74 ERA with 89 saves in 216 games.

Mujica, a 10-year MLB veteran, enjoyed a career year in 2013 as the closer for the St. Louis Cardinals (2.78 ERA, 37 saves), but hasn't been able to regain that success. He signed with the Red Sox and owned a 4.20 ERA in 2014. The 31-year-old was traded by the Red Sox to the A's in May before becoming a free agent at the end of the season. On the season, he had a 4.75 ERA in 47 1/3 innings with 30 strikeouts.

These signings are very low-risk. At worst, they can be released during spring training. At best, however, they would address one of the biggest needs for the Phillies this offseason -- the bullpen.
