Padres' Justin Upton calls All-Star selection 'bittersweet'

Justin Upton will be the Padres’ lone All-Star game representative. It’s a little shocking perhaps given the expectations heaped on the collection of former All-Stars assembled by general manager A.J. Preller in the offseason.

For his part, Upton sounded ambivalent about the selection. Per U-T San Diego, Upton commented on his selection:

“Obviously, they thought I was playing well enough to make the All-Star team...With that, it’s kind of bittersweet. I wish we were playing a little bit better.”

The outfielder has previously been an All-Star in 2009 and 2011. He’s shown power at spacious Petco Park this season -- 11 of his 14 home runs have come at home. He’s also showing off his speed again this year. His 16 stolen bases are the most for the 27-year-old since he swiped 18 in 2012.
