Padres close to signing another Hairston

Published Jan. 17, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

Free-agent infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. is closing on a one-year contract with the Padres, according to a major-league source.

The deal is expected to pay Hairston more than $2 million, the source said.

Hairston, 33, will be united with his brother Scott, 29, who was re-acquired by the Padres in a trade with the A's this week.

The brothers have been teammates only once before — with Team Mexico in last year's World Baseball Classic.

Jerry Hairston spent last season with the Reds and Yankees, and had been among the players the Yankees had been targeting to help fill their left-field vacancy.

Hairston, who played three infield and three outfield positions last season, likely will fill a super-utility role for the Padres, adding speed and athleticism.

In 644 at-bats over the past two seasons — the approximate equivalent of one full season — Hairston has batted .281 with 16 home runs and 75 RBIs.
