Andrew Cashner took the mound for the Padres on Monday night, and unsurprisingly, the Padres didn’t score a run for him. Though perhaps the Padres can’t be faulted this time as they were going up against the Mets’ Jacob deGrom, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year.
Although Cashner did give up six runs (five earned) in less than five innings, he also struck out 12 batters, a career-high. The fact that Cashner gave up over 10 hits and struck out over 10 batters in less than five innings was a major league first. Cashner may have summed up his bizarre performance best, per U-T San Diego:
"It was a weird one," Cashner said. "I thought I had some of the best stuff I’ve had this season. Some balls just fell in.”
