Orioles 6, Yankees 6

Andy Pettitte finally made his second official appearance of spring training on Friday, pitching into the fifth inning in the New York Yankees' 6-6, nine-inning tie with the Baltimore Orioles.

It was the first start for Pettitte since March 17 because of inclement weather. He took part in simulated and intrasquad games after two starts were canceled and a third was limited to one inning by another rain out.

``Everybody was joking, waiting for a black cloud to move in,'' Pettitte said. ``There wasn't a cloud in the sky.''

Pettitte scattered seven hits over 4 1-3 scoreless innings Friday on a cloudless day with temperatures hovering in the 80s. Alex Rodriguez had an RBI single and Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer in the Yankees' four-run first inning.

``The biggest reason I needed this was to build my stamina up,'' Pettitte said. ``You can't simulate a game because it's just not real.''

Baltimore starter Alfredo Simon went four innings, giving up four runs - all in the first - and five hits. Robert Andino had two RBIs for the Orioles.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera had an eventful sixth. He allowed three unearned runs, two hits, one walk and hit Felix Pie with a pitch - which Yankees manager Joe Girardi said resulted in a negative reaction from the Orioles.

``I think something (verbal) came from their dugout and Mo just walked off the mound,'' Girardi said.

After hitting Pie in the lower right leg, Rivera walked slowly toward the Baltimore dugout, stopping well short of the foul line without making any comments or gestures. Girardi then went to the mound and talked with the pitcher.

Rivera, pitching with a combination of an allergy and cold, said he was just walking around.

Girardi raised concerns on Monday night after Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira left with a bruised right elbow after being hit by pitch from Orioles right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, who was struggling with his control.

``It might have been in response to my frustration the other day,'' Girardi said. ``This is the time of year you don't want to see that kind of stuff.''

The Orioles had departed Steinbrenner Field before Girardi's postgame comments.

Pie left with a bruised lower right leg.

New Orioles infielder Julio Lugo, acquired Thursday from St. Louis, went 0 for 2 in his debut.

``I haven't thought about playing him anywhere other than second and short,'' Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. ``Maybe he could play someplace else but I haven't thought of that.''

New York designated hitter Nick Johnson left in the first with a bruised right knee after fouling a ball off his leg. Girardi said there is some concern about Johnson's status for the season opener Sunday night at Boston.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expects catchers Jorge Posada (stiff neck) and Cervelli (strained left hamstring ) to be ready for the first Red Sox game.

NOTES: Baltimore RHP Kam Mickolio (groin) and LHP Brad Bergesen will pitch in a minor league intrasquad game on Sunday. ... Yankees LHP Damaso Marte (sore shoulder) could pitch in a couple days. ... New York RHP Alfredo Aceves (back tightness) threw an inning in a minor league game.
