Ogden Raptors Win Worst Promotion of the Year

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:06 p.m. ET

There have been some truly horrendous promotions over the years in an effort to get people to come to the ballpark. The Ogden Raptors have just taken that to a new level of stupidity.

Some ideas should just get people fired. New Coke, the Edsel, and Live Savers soda were all ideas that people thought were brilliant, only to go up in flames. But apparently, the geniuses behind these thoroughly disastrous concepts found jobs working in the promotions department for the Ogden Raptors, the Dodgers entrant in the Pioneer League.

In an effort to get people to talk about the team, or maybe in an attempt to destroy any semblance of goodwill, the Raptors have created Hourglass Appreciation Night. However, this is not celebrating those fun little knick knacks that allow one to tell time. Instead, it is a night geared towards ogling women with hourglass figures. In fact, let's just take an excerpt from the press release:

The home team hosts the Billings Mustangs, but the real thoroughbreds will join Raptors broadcaster A.P. Harreld in the booth. Since August is the eighth month of the calendar year, and an 8 looks tantalizingly similar to an hourglass, be there a better way to remind the world that baseball needs no clock than to feature 18 hourglass-shaped color commentators?

That may be the most misogynistic press release in baseball since 1931, when Kenesaw Mountain Landis voided Jackie Mitchell's minor league contract because the game was "too stressful for a girl." But, you know, it's not like there are any female baseball fans… Oh wait, there are. Well, there are certainly no females in the press box… Wrong again.

In a way, I guess we should not be all that surprised by this blatantly stupid idea. After all, this is the same organization that thought it was funny to put their groundskeepers in dresses and call them "drag queens." The Raptors are certainly no strangers to ascending into the muddy skies of stupidity.

The blame for this idea has to come from many levels. While it's possible that one idiot created the idea as a drunken joke, numerous people had to think this was a good idea. Or maybe they felt that the publicity, regardless of how negative it would be, could be considered a positive. Nonetheless, everyone involved with this idea needs to find their way to the local unemployment office.

Even though we're only in June, the Odgen Raptors have taken the prize for the worst promotion of the year. The scary thing is, they could still out-do themselves.
