New charges filed against man in St. Louis robbery-shooting
ST. LOUIS (AP) A man already facing state charges in a robbery shooting that wounded and paralyzed a man as he left a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game with his girlfriend was indicted Wednesday by federal grand jurors on seven felony counts.
The indictment's charges against Kilwa Jones, 30, of St. Louis, include robbery and assault on federal property, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and being a felon with a firearm. St. Louis prosecutors already had charged Jones with assault, robbery and armed criminal action.
Police have said Christopher Sanna, 43, and girlfriend Lisa Simpson had just left the Cardinals game on Sept. 25 and were in a parking lot a few blocks from Busch Stadium when two men demanded their belongings. The woman gave up her purse and the couple turned to run when one of the suspects shot Sanna in the back, according to police.
Sanna's mother has said doctors have told the family her son - a U.S. Army veteran - will probably never walk again.
Jones now faces federal charges because the holdup happened on U.S. government property - the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, home of the Gateway Arch.
An attorney for Jones, who has been jailed on $1 million cash bond since his September arrest, said Wednesday his client will plead not guilty in both cases. Scott Rosenblum added that ''we will review all of the evidence and determine our course.''
''These obviously are very serious allegations,'' Rosenblum told The Associated Press. ''We'll have to sort through the evidence.''
