The Mets will have three starting pitchers coming off surgery next season

The Mets’ Dark Knight is rising.

Matt Harvey has resumed throwing, a bit less than three months after having surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

He recently posted an image on Instagram:

Harvey is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

He opted for surgery over an injection in his right shoulder that may have temporarily alleviated the issue.

Often dealing with the loss of feeling in the fingertips on his right hand, Harvey posted a 4.86 ERA and 1.46 WHIP while striking out 76 batters in 92.2 innings (17 starts) this season.

2016 was a nightmare for Harvey, who was booed off the mound at Citi Field shortly before his diagnosis was known.

Anyone who booed Harvey should be ashamed. But the fact that they booed him at all might mean they don’t have the capacity for that emotion.

Along with successful returns of Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz, the Mets need Harvey to return to form in 2017.

His numbers in 2015, during his first year back from Tommy John surgery, were incredible:

A 2.71 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 189.1 innings (29 starts) with 37 walks and 188 strikeouts.

He was then largely dominant in the postseason, with a 3.04 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with eight walks and 27 strikeouts in 26.2 innings (four starts).

Harvey should’ve been pulled from Game 5 of the World Series after issuing a leadoff walk. And if he had been (thanks, Terry), perhaps he would’ve come out of the bullpen in Game 7 as the Mets capped their comeback and won the championship. But we digress.

2017 will be an enormous year for both Harvey and the Mets, with Harvey trying to recapture his form with free agency looming after 2018 and the team trying to finish their unfinished business.
