Melvin now alongside Howe, La Russa on A's all-time wins list
With the Oakland Athletics' extra-inning win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night, manager Bob Melvin took over sole possession of third place on the A's all-time wins list.
It was Melvin's 369th win as A's skipper, passing Ken Macha and putting him in the top three of the A's all-time managerial rankings.
If he wants to reach the next two, however, he'll have to stick around a while: Art Howe is next in line with 600 victories, and Hall of Famer Tony La Russa has a robust 798 career wins for the green and gold.
Speaking to CSN Bay Area's Joe Stiglich about his success with Oakland since taking over in 2011, Melvin didn't hold back his appreciation of the chance to helm the A's: “This one’s been a little different for me. Whenever you come back home to manage, the team that you watched when growing up, there’s something special for that. I said that from the first day I got here. This will always be a very special job for me. Hopefully this is my last job, and it’s been terrific from Day 1.”
He has had tremendous success with the A's, guiding them to three straight postseason appearances from 2012-2014, so he could very well be within the organization for years to come barring any unforeseen developments.
