Marlins' Kelly and Mathis both break fingers
MIAMI (AP) Even with two broken fingers, the Miami Marlins can count the number of healthy reserves on one hand.
Reserve infielder Don Kelly and backup catcher Jeff Mathis left Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Each broke the ring finger on his right hand.
''Crazy,'' Kelly said. ''It's nuts.''
Kelly, making his first start of the year, was hurt fielding a grounder at third base in the second inning. Mathis left the game in the eighth after a foul tip hit him.
Both will go on the disabled list. Mathis said he expects to be sidelined four to six weeks, and Kelly's prognosis might be the same. Both will be evaluated further.
The Marlins lost 8-5 and ended their homestand 1-5.
''Frustrating. Real frustrating,'' Mathis said. ''Tough day all the way around.''
