Madison Bumgarner has only faced two lefties this year

In Tuesday night’s game against the Dodgers, the only left-handed hitter Madison Bumgarner faced was Clayton Kershaw. In fact, the Dodger pitcher is one of only two left-handed batters Bumgarner has faced through five starts this season. The other is D-backs outfielder Ender Inciarte. The two are a combined 2-for-9 against MadBum.

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News points out that lefties have not done terribly worse against Bumgarner than righties -- .224 vs. .244 last season.

MadBum should probably be used to only seeing right-handers, but he still seemed surprised, according to Baggarly:

“I thought, `When’s the next time I get to see a lefty?’” Bumgarner said. “I mean, it’s different, but you’ve got to make pitches to whomever you’re facing.”

For comparison, left-handers have 24 at-bats against Kershaw this season in the lefty’s five starts.

Cardinals left-handed hitter Matt Adam actually hit home runs off of both lefties in the playoffs last year.
