La Russa could miss series vs. Cubs
Joe Pettini, the acting St. Louis Cardinals manager, said this afternoon that he doesn't expect Tony La Russa to rejoin the team in time for tomorrow's game at Wrigley Field.
So, it's possible that he will miss the entire three-game series against the Chicago Cubs, which begins tonight.
La Russa, who has a case of shingles that has affected the right side of his face, underwent a battery of tests at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona on Monday.
La Russa may need to be away from the team until later in the week while receiving treatment for the infection.
"He's really got to be careful," said Pettini, normally the Cardinals' bench coach. "The eye is still swollen. It was half-closed (on Sunday, when he was last around the team). It's been a struggle for him over the past few weeks."
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland told the Detroit Free Press that he talked with La Russa on Tuesday. "He’s got the shingles real bad," said Leyland, one of La Russa’s closest friends. "He’s hurting."
