Key Moments
Giants 1st: Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson seemed in control, sandwiching strikeouts around Freddy Sanchez's single. Then Hanson walked Buster Posey, bringing Pat Burrell to the plate with two outs and runners at first and second. Hanson grooved a first-pitch fastball - and Burrell promptly crushed it, the sound of bat meeting ball resonating throughout China Basin. The ball landed at least 10 rows into the left-field bleachers for a resounding three-run homer.
Braves 2nd: Imagine this: Braves manager Bobby Cox got ejected. First-base umpire Paul Emmel tossed Cox after Emmel called Alex Gonzalez out on a close play after a terrific diving stop and strong throw by Giants shortstop Juan Uribe. Cox unsuccessfully argued that Giants first baseman Aubrey Huff pulled his foot off the bag; television replays were inconclusive.
Giants 2nd: Cody Ross, looking more and more like a wise choice as the playoff starter in right field, swatted a one-out double to left field. Matt Cain the hitter then gave Matt Cain the pitcher some extra cushion, knocking home Ross with an RBI single to stretch the Giants' lead to 4-0.
Braves 6th: Atlanta ended its series scoreless streak at 14 innings, thanks to Derek Lee's single, Burrell's error in left allowing Lee to reach second and Brian McCann's RBI single. Cain suddenly seemed vulnerable, at least until he retired Melky Cabrera on a flyball to left, struck out Brooks Conrad on a chest-high fastball and got Gonzalez on another fly to left.
Braves 8th: Lee and McCann greeted reliever Sergio Romo with consecutive singles, putting runners at first and third and prompting Giants manger Bruce Bochy to summon closer Brian Wilson earlier than planned. Cabrera fouled off several Wilson pitches before reaching on a throwing error by third baseman Pablo Sandoval, with Lee scoring. Conrad's sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, and Gonzalez tied the game at 4-4 - and stunned the overflow crowd - with a two-run double to the gap in left-center.
Giants 10th: Pinch-hitter Edgar Renteria placed a beautiful bunt single down the third-base line, then moved to second on Andres Torres' sacrifice. Freddy Sanchez reached by taking a Kyle Farnsworth fastball off his hand, and Farnsworth followed by walking Huff on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Posey could have ended the game, but he grounded into a 5-4-3 double play - a risky decision by third baseman Troy Glaus, who could have thrown home - to end the inning.
Braves 11th: Rick Ankiel smacked Ramon Ramirez's pitch into McCovey Cove, giving the Braves their first lead of the series.
